Khaya Cabinet
Khaya Cabinet
The Khaya cabinet examines the dialogue between historical and contemporary design - an ongoing keystone of our practice.
The Khaya Cabinet is made from mahogany off cuts, utilising a byproduct of the musical instrument industry; warped, cracked and varied in tone, this timber is deemed impractical for use and set aside. The imperfections and irregularities in the wood are celebrated for their rich character - every crack lovingly held together within inlaid ties and every curved edge masterfully joined and highlighted as an essential part of the piece's sculptural design.
The cabinet's scale and majesty grows softly through these distortions; standing at nearly 8ft in height, it is a homage to the grandiose fine furniture of eras gone by. Gareth employs his deep knowledge of historical techniques to produce this exquisitely made cabinet, while commenting on the throw away culture of the contemporary timber industry.
